Scholarships for Vocal

The Vocal/Choral Music Department provides scholarship help for students who are majoring or minoring in music. Each year, four scholarships are granted to the most outstanding incoming freshmen student musicians. Preference is given to one soprano, one alto, one tenor and one bass. The scholarship is intended to defray the extra cost of private voice lessons fees (approximately $225 per semester). A student must re-audition for the scholarship each semester, rewarding the students who are demonstrating the greatest achievement.

Eligibility requirements for incoming freshmen:

• A student must be majoring or minoring in music.
• A student must audition for a Music Department faculty member or
• Mail a CD or cassette tape to the Music Department.
• A student must be a full-time student, taking a minimum of 12 credits.

Eligibility requirements for continuing students:

• A student must be majoring or minoring in music.
• A student must audition for a Music Department faculty member.
• A student should be working on completion of an Associates Degree.

Audition dates:

• For Spring Semester, 2008. The audition date is November 15.
• For Fall Semester, 2008. The audition date is April 11.
• Remember, if you cannot make these dates, please write to Dr. Fisher and discuss the options.

Procedure for arranging auditions:

• E-mail Dr. Fisher at will_fisher@yc.edu to request an audition opportunity.
• Indicate which school you attend and what voice part you sing.

What do I do at the audition?

• You will be guided through vocal warm-up exercises by a Music faculty member to determine vocal quality and range.
• You will then be asked to sing a solo. The selection of a classical art song is most preferred for the audition. However, selections from musicals, folk music, or religious music may be used. The college will not provide an accompanist, so please use either an accompaniment tape/CD or arrange for your own accompanist. An a cappella selection may also be used.
• You will be evaluated on tonal memory.

Deadline dates:

• Please call for an audition date at least one week prior to the audition.
  November 8th for Spring Semester 2008
  April 4th for Fall Semester 2008
• If you are mailing in an audition tape or CD, please have it postmarked one week before the date of the audition.
• You will be notified of the results of the audition two weeks after the audition.
