Streaming Media at YC

The college has a streaming media server available for faculty and staff. This allows online video and audio to be delivered more efficiently to the internet audience. The streaming media server can stream Windows Media Video (.wmv), Windows Media Audio (.wma) and QuickTime(.mov).

HOWEVER: please see the notes below on using QuickTime videos.

To upload media for streaming, you must first contact the TELS office at 717-6120 to have a user account created. Then you can follow the steps below to upload.

Using Streaming Media Management to Upload Media

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Log in at http://blackhawk.yc.edu:8080 using your YC user/password.

2. Click on “Upload New Media”

  • Enter a title (required)
  • Enter a description (optional)
  • Select the course ID that the media is related to. All current courses should be listed in the “Department/Course” drop-down menu. If not, select “OTHER” at the bottom of the list, and enter something indicative of the course or subject in the “Alternate Department/Course” field (No spaces in this name, whatever it is!!).
  • Use the “Browse” button next to the “Media File” field to locate your movie file (No spaces in this name either, whatever it is!!)
  • Leave “No” checked in the “Make Private” field
  • Check one of the boxes next to “Copyright Status”
  • Finish by clicking “Upload Media” at the bottom.

3. When the file is uploaded, you will get a message saying that the upload was successful, along with a URL address such as this: mms://blackhawk.yc.edu/stream/WLD210/weldingMovie.wmv.

Or this for QuickTimemovies: rtsp://blackhawk.yc.edu/ANT104/quicktimeMovie.mov (**QuickTime links only open on a Macintosh)

COPY THAT URL and paste it into a text file, and save it to a file as a record of your uploads.

4. Lastly, paste the URL into your Blackboard course where you want students to access it. You can also email the link, or use it however you otherwise use hyperlinks.

Add Video Link Instructions

We suggest you place these video instructions near the link to streaming Windows media:

For Macintosh users, download the free “Flip4Mac” plug-in for QuickTime:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

If your Windows computer doesn't have Windows Media Player, you can download it free here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=4

Notes on Using QuickTime Videos

Firstly, QuickTime links only open on a Macintosh, so we recommend creating Windows Media unless absolutely necessary. Windows Media plays 99% of the time on a Macintosh using the Flip4Mac plug-in linked in the linking instructions above.

If you decide to use QuickTime on the streaming server, it must be streaming formatted, or “hinted” for streaming, otherwise it won’t play at all in most cases.

If you are using Camtasia to create QuickTime movies, follow these steps to create streaming media:

  1. Choose “Produce movie as…” in Camtasia Producer.
  2. Choose “Custom production settings” in the first panel of the wizard.

3. Choose “MOV - QuickTime movie” from the next panel.

camtasia wizard: select "MOV - quicktime movie"

4. Click the “QuickTime Options” button from the next panel.

5. Check the box next to “Prepare for Internet Streaming” and select “Hinted Streaming” from the drop-down choices there. Press OK.

6. Follow the rest of the wizard to produce your movie.
