Web Responsibilities
The YC web site is a complex ongoing project requiring the participation and support of over 100 individuals and departments. With over 2500 web pages, eight servers specifically devoted to web sites and web-based applications, and more than 30 supported applications, we felt it would helpful to outline what we do and what our partners (committees and departmental web authors) do to support this very visible project at YC.
Web Services Departmental Responsibilities:
- Design and develop new website templates and navigation (header, footer, breadcrumbs, etc.).
- Design and implement new back-end technology to support the website.
- Analyze and implement new web-based and web-accessible software for institutional or departmental use.
- Provide direct support to web authors for each department (approx. 100 total).
- Provide training to all departmental web site managers and/or their designees.
- Proactively monitor and maintain all YC web sites and web applications.
- Monitor availability and responsiveness of servers.
- Maintain security of applications and content.
- Maintain and/or support academic web applications including Blackboard, Tegrity, and course-specific applications (e.g. FrontPage).
- Plan, install, and maintain YC weather stations and related equipment.
- Plan, install, and maintain public- and private-use network cameras and related equipment.
- Support and maintain streaming video infrastructure for academic use.
Web Committee Responsibilities:
- Develop technical and interface standards for the web site.
- Develop policies and procedures.
- Provide ongoing guidance for the development of the web site.
- Prioritize current and future projects.
- Solicit user input.
Web Author Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain departmental web site and web pages.
- Attend one or more of the training classes offered by WSS.
- Proactively review and update content as appropriate.
