All web pages hosted on the main YC website must include the YC standard header. Usually this is done automatically if you are creating content within our Content Management Server (CMS), ContentXML.
The standard header is comprised of two main elements:
The logo and tabbed site-wide navigation can only be changed upon approval of the YC Web Committee. The sub-image can be changed at any time (but you will need to contact Web Services to update the file for you).
A sub-image can be developed by the web author, by the Web Services group (as time permits), by Design Services (you must submit a marketing request form), or using a volunteer or third-party company (subject to available funding from the requesting department).
Where do I get photos to use? Good question. It may depend on your department or your vision for the image. Most departments use a photo that represents who they are or what they do - for example, the Purchasing department has an artistic photo of money and calculator tape. The YC Foundation has photos of the people, places, and events that they support through scholarships and grants. Some departments use a single image, and some use multiple images. Some take time to make the images look very artistic, others use a photograph with little or no touch-up (though a basic photo can still look good - take a look at the Campus Police header). What you do is up to you (and your department head), but please keep in mind that everything you do on your web site reflects not only on you, but on your department and the College as a whole. Okay, enough about that - let's get on to the specifics:
Dimensions for the sub-image are 769x62, and the graphic should be in graphics interchange format (GIF), with a maximum size of 40 kilobytes. Source Photoshop files are available to get you started.
At this time, sub-images are supported only for YC-recognized departments and groups. For example, an image would be approved for the ITS department, but not for the Web Services group (a part of the ITS department). This is to cut down on the time required to develop and maintain images, as well as to reduce confusion and support branding of the new web site. This policy is flexible - if you have a specific need, please contact us (see link below in footer).
