Yavapai College Campus Police - Dial 311

Message from the Police Chief

Yavapai College Campus Police Chief Kevin Nelson

Yavapai College Police Department employs certified police officers who are committed to providing a safe learning environment and a high level of professional service to everyone. Empowerment to enforce laws and rules is granted, and the respect and confidence of the police department is earned through the service provided to the community.

Traditional law enforcement techniques over the years have lost true effectiveness and in most instances only provide a temporary solutions to issues that have been recognized for several years. Community Oriented Policing methods have proven to be valuable in campus communities as situations are not only a police problem, rather solutions of situations are resolved by several departments working in unison for the benefit of all students, employees and visitors.

Yavapai College - Dial 311

Yavapai College implemented a '311' (non-emergency) dialing feature from all college phones, which is a customer friendly, easy to remember way to dial Campus Police for assistance. This feature has been very well received and has opened communications with Campus Police and students building a stronger and lasting relationship. Our '911' system is state of the art. Prior to 3 years ago, when 911 was dialed it only identified the street address of Yavapai College making it nearly impossible to determine where the call originated. The '911' system now sounds a phone alarm at Campus Police, a text message is sent to the on-duty officer's cellular phone and also the computer in the Chief's office, all giving the exact location on campus where '911' was dialed. The call goes to Prescott Police Department Dispatch and the officers are then given the information of the emergency.

Many campus police departments across the country, including Yavapai College Police Department do not have the staffing to handle large community and sporting events to catastrophic emergencies. Resources available from adjacent cities, towns and counties and continued dialog and training provides confidence within the campus community , and a coordinated public safety presence and response.

The Yavapai College Police Department takes pride in providing a high level of customer service and feel it is a privilege to be granted the opportunity to serve students, employees and visitors within our community.

Sincerely,
Kevin Nelson
