Project: Clean Plate

November 6 - 16, 2006

Chartwells, Bldg. 3

Project: Clean Plate is a campus wide service program organized by Chartwells, Campus Activities, Facilities, Phi Theta Kappa and the Baha'i Association, but YOU are key to the program's success.

The goal of Project: Clean Plate is to reduce food waste by creating an awareness about how much food is thrown away.

How does it work? Simple:

  • take only what you plan to eat and clean your plate
  • Chartwells will weigh the garbage daily
  • beginning weight - ending weight = lbs. of food donated
  • donation will go to the Yavapai Food Bank in time for the Thanksgiving holiday
  • Chartwells will donate a minimum of 20 lbs. of food
  • Shamrock Farms will match Chartwells' donation

Did you know...

  • Americans throw away more than 25 percent of the food we prepare, about 96 billion pounds of food waste each year.
  • According to Food Not Bombs, an advocacy group, the amount of food required to meet the needs of the hungry is only four billion pounds.
  • The decomposition of food and other waste under anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG) 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Landfills are the largest human-related source of methane in the United States, accounting for 34 percent of all methane emissions.

What YOU can do:

  • Source Reduction – Reduce the volume of food waste generated by
Taking only what you plan to eat
Allowing enough time to eat or getting it to go
  • Feed People – Donate extra food to food banks, soup kitchens and shelters
  • Feed Animals – Provide food to farmers
  • Industrial Uses – Provide fats for rendering and food discards for animal feed production
  • Composting – Convert food scraps into a nutrient rich soil amendment

Questions? Please contact Julie Moss, Campus Activities Coordinator at 717-7679 or by email.
